For any cardholder who enjoys getting the most out of their wallet, it's likely that rotating bonus categories is already a thing they have on their radar. A few big banks do provide this benefit, and Citi is one of them, namely with their Citi Dividend Platinum Select Visa Card. Although the card has ceased taking on new players a long time ago, current cardholders ought to be able to enjoy the quarterly bonus construction and the categories for the final quarter of 2026 just dropped.
If you have this card in your wallet, here is all you need to know about the new bonus categories, the earning system in practice and what you should do before October 1 to not miss out on free money!
The Citi Dividend Platinum card offers a twist on flat-rate cash-back cards, which reward the same cashback amount for all purchases made on the card. Citi divides the year into four sections and gives a different set of bonus categories to each section: January-March, April-June, July-September and October-December. These purchases provide a higher earning rate of 5% cash-back, rather than the card's earnings rate, during the period of your enrollment.
The catch? All of these things don't just happen by themselves. To get the bonus rate, you must actively register your card each quarter and usually, Citi opens up registration around 15 days before each new quarter. If you miss one, you won't get any benefit even if you're playing a lot in a bonus category.
So for the time period October through December 2026, Citi has identified two categories to keep an eye on:

The registration process for these categories is now open, and the bonus rate will be in effect from October 1, 2026.The definitive guide to actually enrolling and beginning to earn, without the jargon.
It is easy to sign up for the bonus rate, but it's important to do it at the right time. Your card needs to be registered online via Citi's registration page prior to the start of the quarter. A few important points that many cardholders don't realize: You don't immediately start earning bonus points when you enroll. If you sign up in advance the higher rate kicks in on the first day of the new quarter, if you sign up it'll be two days later.
If you are considering going out for dinner or traveling on Citi's site this fall, you may want to sign up before October. This Card is Different from Other Rotating Category Cards. If you have already used one of the cards such as Citi's Chase Freedom Flex or Citi's Discover it Cash Back Card, you may think that the Citi Dividend Platinum card is the same. It does not and this is quite important when planning your spending.
Spending limits for bonus categories like Freedom Flex reset every quarter for a $1,500 limit. Use up to that amount, get a higher rate, and at the beginning of the next quarter, the counter resets to zero. The Citi Dividend Platinum card has a different strategy: It only lets you earn bonus cash-back on an annual basis, not a quarterly basis.
In the real world, this translates to a maximum of $300 of cash-back per year for all of your purchases (including bonus categories). The kicker is that that $300 limit is annual, not quarterly, so if you do some shopping in all the correct categories, you could max out your entire year's worth of bonus money in one quarter. A wonderful idea in theory, but there is a true cost. After you reach the annual cap, you won't be able to collect any more bonus cash back for the rest of the year, even if new categories are introduced that could have been ideal to use the bonus on.
It encourages those who plan ahead to be rewarded instead of the ones who just swipe. If you are aware that you are about to travel a long distance or you are going to indulge in a lot of dining out in the coming period, it might be advantageous for you to plan your enrollment and spendings according to that. However, if you use up your cap too quickly, and sloppily, you may end up without any additional income for a few months.

Even the Citi Dividend Platinum card offers good value for the cardholder who is willing to keep up with quarterly enrollment. The bonus program pays 5% cash back on restaurant purchases and on Citi Travel bookings (excluding flights) up to $300 per calendar year (or all of it in one busy quarter).
This guidance does not apply for new applicants, as this card is no longer available. If you are, don't miss that window of opportunity for enrollment. There is nothing that can be achieved in a few minutes online that doesn't cost you anything, but can save you cash-back you would otherwise be earning automatically. Remind yourself, sign up early and use the two categories to your advantage as you round out the year.
