Many travelers who travel to Latin America haven't considered Copa Airlines' loyalty program. It doesn't receive the same kind of attention that United's or Delta's program does, and that's a pity, but ConnectMiles has some of the best redemption value of any Star Alliance program. There's an additional reason to be interested right now: Copa is below one of its best sales of miles in recent memory, offering anything from 45% off.

This may seem like an odd idea if you've never purchased miles from an airline before. Why would you pay cash for a thing which you can get by flying or by spending money with credit cards? For example, there are a few times when it's actually profitable, and this promotion is good enough to investigate.

Why Copa's Program Deserves a Second Look

Copa Airlines, based in Panama, is a member of the Star Alliance, which means that ConnectMiles isn't only useful for Copa flights. They can all be redeemed through the alliance's vast network of United Airlines, Air Canada, Lufthansa and dozens of other member carriers worldwide.

The advantage of ConnectMiles to frequent redeemers is the firm award chart. Copa's chart remains unchanged unlike programs which secretly adjust redemption rates based on airline demand, airline holidays or how much they want to sell a seat. The predictability makes it much easier to book a redemption months ahead of time that won't be burdened with any extra mileage costs by the time you're ready to book that target flight.

The Details of the Current Sale

Copa is offering its members ConnectMiles for as low as 1.59 cents per mile until August 31, 2026. Discount is based on volume - it will get better the more miles you purchase.

• There is no discount for buying 1,000 miles!
• If you purchase within 3,000 to 7,000 miles, you will receive a 25% discount.
• If you buy 10,000 miles, it is bumped to 35% off.
• Purchasing a minimum of 15,000 miles will be 45% off at approximately 1.59 cents per mile.

The top buy is at 100,000 miles when you have a total cost of $1,588.95 which is just under 1.59 cents per mile on average. In comparison, that's the price of Copa miles approaching the lowest price we have ever recorded, around 1.5 cents in the past. It also beats the more typical range of 1.61 to 1.87 cents per mile that Copa has charged in recent promotions. The only thing it can't beat is Copa's occasional 100% purchase bonus, which is the gold standard when it's around.

Here are a couple of words of caution for anyone considering making a purchase: The promotion ends at the end of August 2026, purchase amounts are limited to 100,000 miles per transaction, and customers will have to purchase by the 1,000 mile increments. The transaction is not done over Copa, but rather over Points.com, and so it's worth using one of the capital one's everyday spending cards that offers strong rewards on purchases made outside of its primary area of focus, in this case, airline travel, to squeeze a little more value from the transaction itself.

When Buying Miles Actually Makes Sense

Mile buying is generally not a good deal, except under two conditions. The first is when you are already within a few miles of a certain amount for a redemption and it costs less to purchase just a few miles than to acquire the full amount. The second is when you intended to purchase a ticket anyway, and the cost of the miles ticket is cheaper than the cash fare would be.

• Economy or business economy, the price climbs to 25,000 miles in Southern South America.
• Rates for transatlantic flights to Europe are about 30,000 miles in economy class, 70,000 miles in business class, or 110,000 miles in first class.
• Longer-haul routes, such as Africa and the Middle East, offer business class rides of approximately 80,000 miles, and Japan is around 75,000 miles in business or 110,000 miles in first.

If you're travelling Copa's metal, a flight from the USA to Panama is as cheap as 17,500 miles in economy, 30,000 miles in business a decent rate for any traveler. The Bottom Line

The airline miles discount of 45% is not seen frequently and with this promotion Copa ConnectMiles will be very close to its cheaper price of 1.59 cents each until August 31, 2026. While not a deal that's always going to be profitable, if you're just about to spend the money and think you're going to buy a ticket anyway, this sale may actually save you money when you next travel in the Star Alliance network.
