If It Is a good value to purchase Finnair Plus Avios because of the discounts up to 40%?

If It Is a good value to purchase Finnair Plus Avios because of the discounts up to 40%?

Selling airline miles and hotel points is a common practice in the loyalty world, but not the same selling. Others provide a real value for travellers with certain redemption. Others seem good on the surface but are weak when you analyse the points for what they are worth. Finnair Plus is offering a short window promotion on purchased Avios, which is right on the border of the really interesting and the really useful, depending on your view of the Avios ecosystem and you've got a purpose to fill.

If you are buying at the lowest possible rate, you can get 1.3 cents per Avios from Finnair Plus. It is only up to you whether this is a price worth paying or not depending on what you'll do with them. Let's work it out.

The Discount Structure Works

The promotion is on a tiered structure where the greater the amount of purchases the greater the discount:

  • 5,000–19,000 Avios: 25% off the standard price
  • 20,000–49,000 Avios: 30% off
  • 50,000–84,000 Avios: 35% off
  • 85,000–200,000 Avios: 40% off the standard price

A quirk in the currency system is relevant here, as is the standard purchase price of Finnair. Finnair allows you to choose your Avios purchase in USD or EUR, and the current exchange rate would lead you to believe that the Avios bought in USD would be the better option: at this moment, 1 USD = 2.17 cents and 1 EUR = 2.44 cents in USD. Remember to check out in USD.

If you add the 40% discount to the Avios 85,000–200,000 tier, you end up paying 1.3 cents per Avios at the rate of USD. Once the promotion is reached, 200,000 Avios will cost around $2,604. It's up to you to decide if it's a good use of funds or not, depending on your redemption goals.

How Valuable Finnair Plus Avios?

Finnair Plus is based on Avios which is the same points denomination used by Iberia Plus, Aer Lingus AerClub, British Airways Executive Club and Qatar Airways Privilege Club, to mention some. One of most crucial aspects of this promotion is this interoperability, meaning that Avios booked via Finnair can be effortlessly transferred 1:1 to one of those partner programs.

If you have an appropriate award in mind, you can buy Finnair Plus Avios then redeem them in the other airline's award system, such as sending them to British Airways Executive Club for a Japan Airlines business class booking, to Iberia Plus for a discounted transatlantic booking in business class or to Qatar Airways Privilege Club for a booking in Qsuites.

In the Finnair case, the award chart applies to flights flying within Europe and to transatlantic flights and can offer good value in business class. The airline also provides an award seat guarantee for bookings that takes place well in advance, which is a rare feature in the airline industry and isn't something you're paying Avios for and then hoping to get an available seat.

What Card to Use When Buying

Those who buy Avios on Finnair Plus do not buy directly from Finnair, but Points.com, which means that the transaction will not be booked on the card issuer as an airline purchase but rather as a purchase from Points.com itself. This means that cards that provide a higher earning just on airfare are excluded.

The easiest method is to go with whatever card you think would be ideal for you at the moment one that has a minimum spending cap or one that has the best flat rate on purchases. Here it is a no-brainer that cards with 2x flexible points or 1.5-2% cash back on everything come in.

Be sure to know these things before you purchase

Let's go over the quick summary of what's important before you make a decision to buy:

  • The sale window is open for four days from June 15th to 18th 2026.There are 4 days to decide and act in the sale window from 15th to 18th June 2026.
  • No other discount is available, must be bought on the ground at checkout in USD.
  • Avios minimum purchase requirements: Avios must be sufficient to cover the minimum purchase amount in the Finnair Plus account (100 Avios)
  • Transfer flexibility: Avios transfer 1:1 to British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar Airways and more a huge increase in redemption options.
  • Card selection: Not club- or airline-category cards, please use a flat rate card used for everyday spending or a minimum spend card.

The Two Who Will Purchase

The honest answer is that this promotion is specifically geared toward a certain audience and if you're not in it, the offer isn't really that strong. It is a bad idea to acquire miles speculatively (without a definite use in mind) to use consistently. As with any loyalty currency, Avios can become worth less and for the same reason: cash that is spent on buying the points is cash that can't be spent elsewhere.

There are a number of groups who would benefit from this promotion the most. If you are close to any other program where you can redeem certain awards, you can use this promotion to fill the Avios balance you have at any compatible airline such as British Airways, Iberia, Qatar or even Finnair. In most cases the 1.3 cents per Avios price is more favorable than if a person would pay to acquire Avios via other means.

For business-class travelers traveling to and from the U.S., especially those who are flying transatlantic, traveling now and booking as soon as the award window is open makes sense because the seat guarantee eliminates availability risk and the rates on the Finnair award chart suggest reasonable pricing.

The Transfer Angle Is the REAL Opportunity!

The 1:1 exchange of the promotion to other Avios-carrying offers is undoubtedly the best part of this promotion over a standard buy miles offer. Iberia Plus, especially, has long been among the top redemption programs for transatlantic business class redemptions at redemptions rates better than those of other programs. British Airways has a no secret sweet spot when it comes to short haul bookings with its partners. Qatar Airways Privilege Club includes access to the Qsuites rewards. The redemption options turn the Finnair promotion into a sort of a discount for a bigger thing, not only a Finnair purchase.

The Bottom Line

Finnair Plus is running a 4-day sale to buy Avios at up to 40% off with the highest discount of 1.3 cents per Avios in USD for those who purchase 85,000 or more. The promotion would be interesting for those who have an exact redemption goal in mind, and it could either be a ticket on Finnair or a ticket to be transferred to British Airways, Iberia, Qatar Airways, or another program that accepts Avios currency.

For some it's not a compelling value for anyone who isn't a speculator, but for those with a keen interest in a specific award or a ready Finnair business class booking, the combination of timing and price seems to make it a great value to jump before June 18th.
