A century-old company in the aviation industry is a phenomenal feat and Lufthansa is celebrating this century in style. In 2026, the airline has revealed an impressive special centennial aircraft livery on a number of its fleet as part of its 100 th anniversary in 2026.
The airline has already repainted several planes in this catchy design in a matter of weeks and it is a way of marking an iconic symbol of the airline, the crane, and honoring the centuries of history of the aviation industry.
The festive paint job is not exclusive to a single type of aircraft as well. Lufthansa has picked some of its key aircrafts in the fleet to demonstrate the design and made them flying monuments of the long heritage of the company.
Established in 1926, Lufthansa has expanded over time to become one of the most known brands in the aviation industry in the world. The airline has been able to develop a fleet over the decades, routes to different continents, and emerge as a key player in the global aviation industry.
In commemoration of its 100 th anniversary, Lufthansa chose to design a special anniversary livery that would not only celebrate this historic symbol, but will also capture the present image of the airline and its future aspirations.
What comes out is a design that has a combination of tradition/elegance and innovation- a rare feat in the successful paint schemes in aircraft.
Lufthansa did not only confine the anniversary design to a single aircraft but took a more ambitious move. The airline is also using the 100th anniversary livery on several aircraft that reflect the main sections of its fleet.

To date the special design has been used on the following aircraft:
The aircrafts have their distinct registration numbers and they perform in a normal manner in the global airline route network. This implies that people who are flying on such flights might find themselves accidentally exposed to some aviation history.
A second aircraft shall also be added to the commemorative fleet later in the year when Lufthansa accepts a new Airbus A350-1000 aircraft that will be also adorned with the anniversary design.
This way both the long-haul and short-haul aircrafts will be involved in the centennial celebration.
The theme of the anniversary paint scheme is based on the most impressive symbol of Lufthansa the crane.
The designers did not simply slap the logo on the aircraft in the conventional manner, but rather they were much more creative. The crane is represented in a huge white figure on the blue fuselage, which seems to be flying beside the plane itself.
The wings of the bird are physically blended with the wings of the airplane and this makes a great illusion of the aircraft being in the flight of the crane.
The design is also ingenious as it symbolizes motion and continuation, which denotes the long history of Lufthansa in the aviation industry.
Other features that were incorporated in the design are:
The entire appearance is an audacious mix of deep blue and white, which have been decades-long brand colors at Lufthansa.
When these aircrafts were introduced, they have created a buzz not only to the aviation fans but also in Lufthansa itself.
The arrival of the anniversary aircraft was a special moment to the company as explained by Lufthansa CEO, Jens Ritter.
The delivery of an aircraft bearing centennial livery is, of course, a very big celebration in any airline; however, the fact that it entails an aircraft delivery makes it all the more dignified and poignant.
The aircrafts are not only functioning machines but also flying ambassadors which celebrate the past of Lufthansa but also carry on transporting people all over the world.
Over the last few years, a number of airlines have launched anniversary liveries in an effort to commemorate significant milestones.
An example that may be taken into consideration is that of Delta Air Lines which recently introduced a special Airbus A350 centennial livery when the company celebrated its own milestone of 100 years.
The two designs however are very different. Delta version colors are not the colors that the brand is traditionally known to depict whereas the design of Lufthansa remains far closer to its classic blue and white color scheme.
The centennial planes of Lufthansa share the same level of boldness as they adopted a deep blue fuselage instead of the more widespread whiteness which is used by most airlines today.
Decoration is not everything, and the liveries of aircraft are an essential element of the airline brand.
The goal of every airline is to design an aesthetical appearance that would be immediately
identifiable by the passengers throughout the world airports. These designs through time are regarded as an assurance of dependability, quality of services and tradition.

The crane logos has been doing so since the century-long history of Lufthansa. The centennial livery supports this identity and offers the symbol in a new and contemporary manner.
This blend of tradition and technology is what a lot of successful brands actually strive to find.
Though the centennial livery is a celebration of the history of Lufthansa that is pleasing to the eye, some of the aviation observers also hope that the airline will still enhance the interior experience of its planes.
Nowadays airlines compete intensely in terms of comfort in the cabin, the seat, the entertainment system, and the technology in the cabin. Lufthansa has already started launching modernized cabin products, however, some customers think that more can be done.
However, the jubilee planes remind that Lufthansa is still closely tied to its aviation nature.
One of the most impressive airline designs that have been recently put in place is the centennial aircraft livery of Lufthansa. Through emphasizing the iconic symbol of the crane and incorporating it into the plane design in a creative manner, the airline has made the design of the plane look historic and at the same time contemporary.
Since several planes have already flown in this special paint scheme including Boeing 747-8, Boeing 787-9, Airbus A320neo, Airbus A350-900, and Airbus A380, the passengers around the globe currently have the opportunity to see a bit of aviation history in the sky.
And to those interested in aviation, viewing one of these special aircrafts can become one of the most thrilling plane spots of the decade.
