If you have ever wanted to watch a show, reply to emails or simply scroll your phone on a long-haul flight, only to find that the buffering wheels and Wi-Fi bill are higher than your checked bag, then you'll need to tune in to this one. Lufthansa Group just announced that Starlink satellite internet is officially landing on their planes and it's not just a bunch of marketing jargon, as many airline internet announcements have been, but one with a launch date.

Inside the Announcement: What's Actually Happening?

Lufthansa Group, the parent company of Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti and Edelweiss, has agreed to deploy Starlink's high-speed, low latency internet in all its 850-plus aircraft. The part that differentiates this from other carriers announcing similar programs on a few planes is it's not just a pilot program. It is a commitment of the entire Lufthansa Group, on all airlines.

Better yet, it will be complimentary when travelers sign up for a Miles & More Travel ID, which also is free to register. This is not a premium feature that anyone in business class gets and the normal passengers do not, this is a feature that should be available to all on board, no matter which cabin they are in.

First flights are scheduled to take place on August 19, 2026, with the first Lufthansa A320neo (probably D-AINM) with Starlink technology becoming operational. It will probably serve short-haul routes within Lufthansa's regional network, which makes sense as a step towards international routes in the future.

Why This Matters More Than the Average Wi-Fi Upgrade

Starlink is now the benchmark for inflight connectivity and it's easy to see why when in use. The typical airlines' Wi-Fi system uses the older satellite technology, which doesn't work very well when more than a couple of passengers attempt to use it simultaneously. However, unlike other satellite networks, Starlink has a low-orbit satellite network designed for speed, which means passengers can expect:

• Fast speeds for work, video calls, and heavy internet use.
• Gate-to-gate connectivity without interruptions.
• Smooth, buffer-free streaming and gaming.
• Reliable internet for browsing and shopping.

It's not surprising dozens of airlines have already signed up for Starlink, and the passengers who have already flown on Starlink planes are generally impressed. This is a significant change from ‘nice to have' to ‘useful' inflight internet, especially for those who rely on a good internet connection when traveling.

The Catch: This Rollout Will Take Years

Here comes the not so interesting part. Lufthansa Group has been clear that retrofitting all of its 850-plus aircraft on its different airlines will not be completed until sometime in 2029 which is the best-case scenario. This is no quick task, and retrofitting a large variety of aircraft, all of which are being operated by various airlines, on such a diverse fleet requires time.

Now it remains to be seen how the rest of the planes and airlines will be upgraded after that first A320neo. For now, though, industry observers and frequent flyers alike are making guesses about which routes or aircraft types Lufthansa Group could be looking to next with Starlink.

“Connectivity needs to be perceived as standard expectation for the premium travel experience equal parts with a comfortable seat and a compelling onboard menu,” says Dieter Vranckx, the company's Chief Commercial Officer.

How This Compares to Other European Airline Groups

Interestingly Lufthansa Group followed behind Air France-KLM and International Airlines Group (IAG) in announcing Starlink plans as the last of the “big three” airline conglomerates in Europe to do so. However, there is a substantive difference in terms of scope. So far plans have not been finalized for KLM or Transavia and IAG has not included Vueling in its plans. By contrast, Lufthansa Group is offering the service on all its airlines, which is nice at least for now, but no airline will be left behind.

But that consistency is a welcome break from an industry that sometimes features small print about which subsidiaries are included. Whether Lufthansa Group will fulfill that promise in these terms is yet to be proven, but the motivation to do so is what makes it so special.

What's Next?

It is hardly surprising that the two airlines most associated with high-end branding  Lufthansa and SWISS should make more headway since they are the most aggressive in the battle for their premium, high-dollar, international clientele. Ironically, however, the two airlines already have relatively robust Wi-Fi offerings, with the upgrade on those lines likely more of an enhancement than a complete change.

Meanwhile, there are no plans to provide Wi-Fi in the cabin at all with carriers such as Brussels Airlines, and their need may be more pressing than the one of carriers which may have positioned themselves as premium products. One of the more interesting aspects to watch as this rollout continues might be how Lufthansa Group manages to balance the aspects of brand priority with the actual requirement of the passengers.

Free Starlink Wi-Fi is coming to the entire Lufthansa Group fleet, covering Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti, and Edelweiss. The first flight with the service takes off August 19, 2026, but full fleet-wide coverage isn't expected until 2029 at the earliest. Still, for travelers tired of paying for spotty inflight internet, this is a promising sign that reliable, high-speed connectivity in the sky is finally becoming the norm rather than the exception even if patience will be required to see it through.
