Mexico may be the Best Place to use your Hyatt Brand Explorer Free Nights

Mexico may be the Best Place to use your Hyatt Brand Explorer Free Nights

The World of Hyatt Brand Explorer benefit is vastly underutilised, but for the right traveller delivers well for the value. It's straightforward: spend your 2013 at 5 different Hyatt brands, and you'll get a complimentary night at any location in the entire Hyatt collection. There are no point caps, no points cost just a free night certificate that can be used anywhere in the world that Hyatt operates.

It can sometimes be a logistical nightmare to accumulate those five brand stays for Hyatt loyalists who are interested in the U.S. market. However, Mexico makes a significant difference, not only in terms of the scenery. Mexico is one of the most efficient places on Earth to earn and use Hyatt property credits, as they are earned among a variety of different brands.

What the Brand Explorer Benefit Actually Is

Before we dive into the Mexico angle in particular, it's important to put the benefit into perspective. The more members stay at a participating Hyatt property, the more World of Hyatt qualifying stay credits they will accrue. After spending a year at five different Hyatt brand properties, a Category 1-4 free night certificate is awarded to a member.

It works at any Category 1-4 Hyatt hotel around the world. The range for Category 4 properties is between $300 and $600 or even higher and a free night here is worth far more than a typical category 4 airline certificate. Plus the certificate is not restricted on who can award it to you, you are booking a room, not scouting for award space so it's actually usable and not theoretical in the sense of who could have it and who couldn't.

The catch here is that it's a collection of different brands' stays. One way to think about it is if you're an all business traveler, you could stay 50 nights at Hyatt Regencies within one brand, and not use up any one of their 50 brand explorer certificates.

Mexico ranks 13th Globally for the Number of New Cases

Mexico has something unique to offer the Hyatt faithful: a single spot where you'll find several different brands of Hyatt in close geographic proximity, with a wide range of price points and property types. Someone who visits Mexico several times a year, could mark all the requirements for the Brand Explorer without making a major deviation from their planned trip.

Review the Hyatt brand portfolio in the key markets of Mexico. In Los Cabos, you'll find Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara (both all-inclusive, but the latter geared towards adults only), Park Hyatt (the flagship luxury level hotel) and, on some trips, Andaz or Thompson. No destination was left behind, and that means four different brands four Brand Explorer credits.

The list of brands grows when it's expanded to the Riviera Maya, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico City or the Yucatán. The five-brands are attainable in a well-designed Mexico travel year, thanks to the addition of other brand variety, such as the five brands in the Hyatt portfolio (including Hyatt Place, Aloft, Dreams, part of the AMR Collection portfolio, Secrets, also of the AMR Collection portfolio).

The All-Inclusive Factor

A key part of this is the number of all-inclusive properties in Mexico that are associated with the Hyatt brand. The Ziva, Zilara, Dreams, Secrets and Sunscape brands are all part of the AMR Collection and are all World of Hyatt qualifying stays (including for Brand Explorer).

It's important because how all-inclusive stays work with points differs from regular hotel stays. The points you can get for staying on an all-inclusive property are usually less, and the redemption "values" are different than that of a conventional hotel. So for Brand Explorer, one night at a Hyatt Ziva is one brand towards the 5 Brand requirement for the number of points you earn or fail to earn at the property.

If you are planning to travel to Mexico and book an all-inclusive resort anyway, it is a zero cost earmark for travelers to make a proactive decision to get a Hyatt affiliation and mark it off in their Brand Explorer tracker, which will help you eventually obtain a free night at a completely different type of property under the Hyatt brand.

What can you do with the Free Night?

It is a perfectly legal and sometimes best approach to get Brand Explorer certificates in Mexico and take them elsewhere. The five qualifying nights can be booked throughout multiple trips to Mexico at a moderate cost, for example by staying in an all-inclusive hotel in one location, and a Hyatt Place in another, and the free night certificate can then be used at a Category 4 hotel, which may be quite a bit more expensive.

Let's look at the main rules of the Brand Explorer certificate:

  • Issued by: The Hyatt Hotel & Restaurant Management Program at Elmhurst College
  • Award Search: No award search required to book
  • Top-up with points: If a property is in a higher tier than the certificate it is not possible to add points to achieve a higher tier
  • Annual cycle: The five brands requirement starts again on the 1st of January each calendar year certificates from 2026 are different to 2027
  • Qualifying paid and award stays at participating properties are all counted towards your Brand Explorer credits

The second implication is that award stays count towards Brand Explorer; so if you use your Hyatt points for five different brands you could end up earning a free night certificate that you can use in a cash valued stay. This is a points-on-points scenario that can be developed for an advanced Hyatt member's annual strategy.

Tackling the Challenge of Developing a Mexico Strategy Around This

The best strategy is to plan an entire year for Mexico travel while keeping Brand Explorer in mind. If you know you are coming to Los Cabos in January, consider a two-night stay at the Hyatt Ziva and a one-night stay at the Park Hyatt. Two brands in one trip! When planning a trip to Riviera Maya in the spring, stay at an Andaz hotel one night and a Dreams hotel the next. Two more brands, four all told, in two trips you already had in mind.

The 5th brand can be from a business trip to Mexico City, a Hyatt Place hotel during a domestic layover or any other hotel in the Hyatt family that fulfills the brand requirement before December 31.

The free night certificate turns out from that year's deliberate brand diversification is yours to use wherever the value is greatest: on a Park Hyatt in Tokyo, an Alila in the Maldives or a Thompson in Nashville. The work was done in Mexico and the reward is given elsewhere.

The Bottom Line

Packed with a great concentration of diverse Hyatt brands, such as Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara, Park Hyatt, Andaz, Dreams, Secrets and more, Mexico is the most effective single destination to earn World of Hyatt Brand Explorer credits. It's possible to achieve five of the five different brand hotels in Mexico throughout a travel year without creating any trips, and the free hotel night certificate received is valid for Category 1-4 at any hotel worldwide with NO award availability restrictions. If you are a frequent traveler to Mexico, quite often you can get a good deal on a redemption night by booking a room at a different hotel brand when you book your trip.
