It's not a secret that economy class seats onboard a long-haul flight are pretty uncomfortable and make a person feel exhausted and sleepy by the end of the trip. Air New Zealand is about to change the situation for the better by introducing a new product designed for economy passengers.

After several years of speculation, anticipation, and delay in its implementation, Air New Zealand is finally ready to provide details of its Skynest program: lie-flat bunk beds that are intended for economy and premium economy passengers flying some long-haul routes. The innovation has already been dubbed unprecedented in commercial aviation.

What is Skynest?

Everything is in the title: Air New Zealand decided to install full-sized lie-flat bunk beds in economy and premium economy classes of its 787-9 Dreamliner planes. The six-bed arrangement will consist of three-level bunk beds arranged in the shape of a "V." Six individual pods will be installed on both sides of the cabin. One can say that passengers will be offered a chance to occupy crew rest bunks, as they are used to doing it nowadays.

Each of the 80x23 inches pods will include bedding, including pillows, sheets, blankets, and privacy curtains that can separate passengers from the rest of the cabin. Moreover, each individual Skynest pod will be equipped with a Nestecessities kit consisting of eye masks, earplugs, socks, dental care products, and skincare products from Aotea, a New Zealand-based company.

The other amenities include a USB outlet, ventilation outlet, reading light, and storage space for personal belongings. This is a pretty comprehensive list of services; thus, one can compare the offered Skynests to those available in crew rests.

When Will It Be Possible to Book? What Routes Will Have Them?

According to the announcement made by Air New Zealand, the Skynest will be introduced in mid-2026. To be exact, customers will be able to make bookings starting May 18, 2026, while the first Skynest flights will depart in November 2026. At the beginning, the program will cover only the most popular route operated by the airline Auckland to New York nonstop flights.

As for aircraft types, the Skynest pods will be installed on the airline's newest Boeing 787-9 aircraft. Thus, Air New Zealand plans to gradually introduce the product on other aircraft from its fleet. Interestingly enough, the Skynest program is not expected to be extended to any of the airline's Boeing 777s. The reason behind such a decision was related to the delays in Boeing's production program for 787 aircraft.

How Does the Booking Process Work?

Now it's time to discuss one of the most intriguing aspects of the program. As it is known, it's prohibited to occupy any bunk bed during take-off and landing procedures; hence, passengers will be allowed to book bunk beds for four-hour intervals only. During this period, the cabin lights will be automatically turned on when the allotted time ends; hence, there will be no need to interrupt people's sleep. Each session will be followed by the 30-minute period when the crew members will replace all bedding materials.

As for the number of bunk beds that will be occupied during one flight, the Skynest on the longest flights operated by Air New Zealand is expected to be rented three times. However, as it was mentioned before, the Skynest program at the beginning of its operation will only allow booking two sessions of using pods. In other words, each flight can offer 12 sessions of using the Skynest pod to its passengers.

Is $495 Really Worth it?

The price of booking a session in the Skynest pod is another topic to consider. According to the information provided by Air New Zealand, the cost of renting a pod for four hours is set at $495, or $125 per one hour of lie-flat rest in economy class. Now everyone should answer the question: is this price acceptable?

First of all, one should remember that $495 is not a cheap option and can be considered a substantial amount of extra money paid for purchasing an economy class ticket. On the other hand, upgrading to business class costs much more. Therefore, a passenger who prefers having a good rest instead of spending hours in a regular economy seat might find the proposed option affordable.

From the operational perspective, introducing the Skynest pods does not mean any loss of revenue for the carrier, as the airline will lose only six economy class seats (as compared with the standard configuration). Given the low load factors, one can suggest that the price of $495 is justified from the operational point of view.

Comparison With Other Options

Before concluding this review, it seems important to remind readers of another invention offered by Air New Zealand and called the Skycouch. It is worth noting that the Skycouch provides a traveler with an opportunity to convert three regular economy seats into a flat place that is suitable for sleeping. However, as compared with the Skynest, the couches do not offer sufficient space and lack privacy curtains.

Moreover, United Airlines announced its plan to introduce a similar option called the Relax Row that consists of two reclined economy seats separated by an ottoman. Nevertheless, the Skynest pods remain unique in the world of commercial aviation; hence, other carriers will watch the developments in this direction with great interest.

Thus, it's possible to conclude that the Skynest program has been a long-awaited product in the realm of aviation. After a series of delays, Air New Zealand managed to provide detailed information concerning the dates of implementation, the route network, and pricing.

Whether passengers will find it reasonable to spend almost $500 on such an exotic amenity or prefer spending less money and booking a seat in the business class is a question to be answered. From the carrier's point of view, Skynest will generate decent revenue due to a low number of seats.
