The Amex Business Gold Card is Giving up to 200,000 Points Find out if it's worth your Time to Apply for this

Business credit cards may not be as headline-worthy as certain others, but when a welcome offer reaches 200,000 Membership Rewards points, it's worth looking into. For those who are eligible to sign up for and receive it, the American Express Business Gold Card currently offers rewards up to that amount and at a personal valuation of 1.7 points per dollar, it's worth up to $3,400 in travel redemptions.

As with any welcome offer from American Express, the kicker is that everyone won't have the same number. It is important to remember that offers will vary depending on the applicant and to develop expectations based on the highest reported offers will be the wrong approach. For those with an eligible business, who can afford the expenditure, this is one of the more attractive bonus offers in the business card market today.

What It Takes to Earn the Bonus

The 200,000 point offer requires $15,000 in eligible purchases in the first three months of opening a new account. This is a good benchmark about $5k a month and is the most effective initial screening question to ask if this card is right for your business owner.

If your businesses monthly operating costs are consistent, whether from vendors, advertising, technology or services, then the ability to reach $15,000 in 90 days is very possible, without manufacturing expenses. If you are a business with less monthly throughput, you'll have to work out the math, and make sure you can pay the minimum amount in normal activity before applying.

As soon as the threshold amount is reached, Amex normally deposits the bonus points in a couple of statement cycles. The time of winnings and bonuses will matter when you are making plans, especially if you are looking for a particular redemption that has a booking window.

Inmates are Not Eligible

The Business Gold bonus is only available during the welcome offer and won't be available to anyone who already has the card or who was offered it during any previous version of the card. In addition, there are a couple of "hints" about eligibility that it is worthwhile to be aware of:

  • Other Amex cards, such as personal Amex cards or other business cards do not disqualify you from the Business Gold bonus.
  • The Business Gold is not a credit card but rather a charge card and thus it does not typically affect the five-card limit that Amex has for credit products.
  • This card is not as difficult to get as others for business owners with good credit and legitimate business operation.
  • The Chase 5/24 rule is not impacted by an Amex Business Gold approval because most credit card issuers don't report business cards to the personal credit bureaus as they normally would.

A problem that sometimes slows down an otherwise-qualified application: Sometimes, Amex displays a pop-up during the process that says that they won't be able to offer a bonus, even if a person is considered eligible under all the published requirements. If you see that pop-up, there's likely nothing you can do about it, as that account has already been flagged as one that will not be considered for the current promotion.

The Earning Structure that makes this Worth Keeping

Their welcome bonus is great to get them hyped up, but the long-term value in owning this card is in their 4x earning structure. Throughout the billing cycle, the Amex Business Gold automatically recognizes the top two spending categories that you use most and applies a 4x Membership Rewards earning rate to those categories no effort is required to manually change the spending categories and no need to predict in advance where your business will spend the most.

There are 6 categories that allow for 4x earning:

  • Media purchases through the U.S. advertising marketplace, including online, TV and radio media.
  • In the United States, the e-goods retailers and software or cloud system suppliers.
  • U.S. restaurant buys, including takeout/delivery
  • Fuel sold in the U.S. at gas stations
  • Spending on transit services such as trains, rideshare, parking, tolls, buses, and ferries
  • Wireless phone service charges paid directly to the service provider in the USA.

The 4x rate is in effect on the first $150,000 combined on the two most popular categories per calendar year, then the 1x rate kicks in. For most small to medium-sized businesses two categories of $150K each are more than sufficient runway, although if you're a high volume operation, you may want to be aware of that.

The Use of our Credit Card Helps Reduce our Annual Fee by $375

There's a $375 annual fee on the card, and two benefits of the credit card actually make sense for the appropriate cardholders. Eligible purchases at FedEx through October 2026, Grubhub and office supply stores are eligible for a $20 monthly statement credit for a total of $240 per year, which requires enrollment. If the cardholder is a Walmart+ member, the $12.95 monthly credit pays for the entire Walmart+ membership, potentially saving them more money on shipping, delivery, prescriptions and fuel throughout the year.

These credits can lower the effective annual cost of the card down to less than $0 for cardholders who leverage both, though not all of them may be so useful in practice based on the actual operations of the business of Grubhub, Fedex, or Walmart+. If you must make changes to your spending to earn the credit, it won't be as beneficial as if the credit were allowed to fit into your spending patterns.

The Best use of Amex Membership Rewards Points

The true value of any Amex Membership Rewards bonus isn't whether you use the points at Amex's travel site at a flat rate, but how you use them to earn more value than they have at Amex per point when you transfer them to airline and hotel partners. Amex's transfer network is also one of the most extensive offered by any card issuer, with partners such as Air France-KLM Flying Blue, ANA Mileage Club, Delta SkyMiles, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, British Airways Executive Club, Marriott Bonvoy and others.

The options for transferring with a 200,000-point bonus are actually wide. Top-tier carriers, business class award tickets, or a mixture of these can become a viable redemptive option travel that's aspirational enough to warrant a substantial spend point in order to earn it in the first place.

That's especially beneficial when the points move from one airline to another due to the availability of the different award programs at the time of booking, as the Amex points aren't tied to a specific airline calendar.

The Bottom Line

Currently, the Amex Business Gold Card is welcome to match up to 200,000 Membership Rewards points for $15,000 of new spending within its first three months at a standard 1.7 cent per point valuation, which translates to up to $3,400 worth. Not all applicants will receive the top offer, and the one time per lifetime is for those who already have the card.

If you are an eligible business owner and can spend enough money via regular business spending, this is one of the better business card options around as of now, with a big bonus, automatic 4x on top spending categories and annual credits that can cancel out most of the $375 fee. Please review your individual offer before submitting your application to verify what is offered in your account.
