The Marriott Bonvoy Bevy Card Is Flashing a 175,000-Point Welcome Bonus But Is It the Right Card for You?

The Marriott Bonvoy Bevy Card Is Flashing a 175,000-Point Welcome Bonus But Is It the Right Card for You?

Occasionally, there is a credit card welcome deal which is so tempting to pass. The Marriott Bonvoy Bevy American Express Card is having such a moment now and in case you have been holding back on this card, the moment may be the right time to jump.

An Inviting Bonus That is Worth Knowing

New members will be eligible to earn 175,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points upon spending 5,000 within the first six months of membership. In perspective, the Marriott Bonvoy points are typically worth about 0.7 cents apiece, meaning that this welcome offer would correspond to about 1225 redemption value. It is a good figure and according to most estimates, it is one of the best welcome offers this card has ever had.

To anybody already intending to make a significant purchase, a vacation, or even simple household spending, it is not much of a stretch to make that $5,000 mark in half a year or so. You are facing around $833 per month it is attainable even with no manufacturing expenditure or even without extra effort.

What the Card Brings to the Table

The current cost of the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy Card is 250 a year and the question that comes to mind is whether the perks that are involved can be considered worth retaining the card after the

initial year. Here's what cardholders get:

  • Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite membership up to the lifetime of the card, and 15 elite night credits annually to receive a higher level of status, such as Platinum, Titanium, or Ambassador.
  • 1,000 bonus points per paid eligible Marriott stay on top of the standard 6x earn rate, making it one of the better cards for pure hotel spending

Also included in the card is an anniversary free night award, though there is something significant to consider, you must spend $15,000 on the card within a calendar year in order to earn it. That free night applies to properties of up to 50,000 points per night limited, but you can add up to 25,000 more points to it. It is a fair advantage in case you are a heavy spender, but it is not provided every year as some other cards do.

The Real Comparison You Have to Be Honest

It is at this point that the nuances come into play. The Bevy Card is a good choice, yet it is in between a row of cards that should be considered potentially of more value.

At the top, there is the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card that costs 650 per year. Yes, it is an expensive fee but the benefits are different. Bonvoy Platinum Elite status will be granted to cardholders automatically (which is a significant upgrade over the Gold membership), an annual free night up to 85,000 points, no spending requirement attached, up to 20 dining credits annually, 25 elite night credits annually, and membership in Priority Pass Select. To even the most frequent Marriott customers, even the mere fact that they have become the Platinum automatically can modify the atmosphere of any single stay at the hotel.

On the other side of the scale, Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card is only 125 dollars per annum. It also provides Bonvoy Gold status and an anniversary free night award that is good up to 35,000 points at no spending requirement earned. This card is also a great combination of simplicity and value to small business owners or side hustlers.

The one thing that both of those cards have in common and that Bevy Card does not is an anniversary free night, which is just yours on a yearly basis, with no strings attached. There is much to that difference that meets the eye. When it can only be of great value, as long as it needs to reach a level of 15,000 spent annually, then it becomes not a perk anymore to many cardholders, but a target to pursue. The Business and the Brilliant cards completely avoid that dynamic.

Eligibility: Before Submitting an Application, a Few Things to Know

This is an American Express card and therefore the normal rules of application of Amex apply.

Five Amex credit cards at once (hybrid cards do not count towards this limit) and Amex is usually regarded as one of the issuers that are more open to applicants in terms of approval rates.

With that said, the co-branded card system is actually a complex one with American Express and Chase both issuing Marriott cards, and there are cross-issuer restrictions as well that can result in eligibility depending on what kind of Marriott cards you have had to hold or currently hold. This is why, in case you are a recent holder of a Marriott Chase card, or in case you have had a number of different Marriott co-brands in recent years, before you pull the trigger, you

should do a little research on the precise eligibility requirements. It is one such situation that you save yourself an unwarranted tug of your credit with a couple of minutes research.

So, Should You Apply?

In case you have been waiting to be convinced of the wisdom of applying to Marriott Bonvoy Bevy Card, a 175,000 point welcome bonus is as good of a reason as any. The bid is high, the earn rate on spending with the Marriott hotel is competitive and the Gold Elite level is an actually useful base level to any one who is accumulating towards the greater levels of Bonvoy.

With that said, it is worth telling the truth about where this card would fit in the greater Marriott ecosystem. It is not the most rewarding long-term holding in the portfolio, in large part due to that spend-gated free night. In case you want to gain as many Marriott loyalty points as possible in the long term, and not just use a great sign-up deal, you are probably better off with the Brilliant Card or the Business Card in the long run.

The Bevy Card isn't a bad card. However, in a portfolio of choices that has a strong and powerful offering as well as a shrewd and efficient mid-tier offering, it is in a clumsy mid-range positioning. The welcome offer is worth taking a second look at at present, all you need to do is to go in with your eyes open as to whether you will be able to get full value out of it once you get past the first year.
