It is a piece of coastline just north of Cancun that has been quietly taking a bite out of its well known neighbor over the last few years. Costa Mujeres, named after the beloved island it lies before, has been attracting travelers who desire the Caribbean beauty of the Yucatán Peninsula without the noise and density of the hotel zone of Cancún. And this summer, it is receiving its most high-profile visitor ever.
The short version of it is this: had development proceeded a little more slowly and a little more deliberately, it might have become what Costa Mujeres is now. The beaches are cleaner, the pace is lower and Isla Mujeres, the cute car-free island that has been so popular in the decades-old travelers have been visiting that spot is just across the water.
Marriott saw the energy of the area back in late 2022 when the company announced that it was planning to bring a St. Regis to this area. The initial schedule was an opening in 2025, but the project was late. It is not uncharacteristic of large scale development of luxury resorts in this part of Mexico and the delay has not lessened the excitement regarding what is to come. At least it has stockpiled a greater length of runway of anticipation.
Whether the food is worth eating or you are paying $45 a mediocre Caesar salad because you have nowhere to eat is one of the things that often make the difference between a great luxury resort and a merely expensive one.
St. Regis Costa Mujeres seems to have given due consideration to this. The property consists of four separate dining concepts and The St. Regis Bar, and none of them is just another corner of the same generic menu:
That is a rightly diverse array of one-property and property. Whether you are after a sake-forward evening or fresh ceviche and your toes in the sand, there is a dedicated space to it and that type of specificity tends to indicate a kitchen team that takes every idea seriously.
Outside the beach itself, and the restaurants, the resort is constructed around the type of amenity stack that makes a stay feel self-contained in the best possible way. It has a fitness center, an exclusive adults-only swimming pool, another swimming pool intended to accommodate families with children, and a whirlpool. The wellness aspect of things is completed with a full service spa.
To the business traveler or to those planning to have a buyout event, the property has two dedicated event rooms and nearly 7,300 square feet of meeting and function space a significant offering of a resort of this size.
It is the combination that makes Costa Mujeres the destination, not just a beach stop: you can truly spend a week here and not run out of things to do, but the setting is calm enough that you can do nothing and feel just as good as you would by doing nothing in a location that seems to be in stress.

Opening months of cash rates are in the range of about $662 per night and then it rises and reaches up to about 750 per night in the months of November and December as the peak season in the winter is approaching. That goes along with what the St. Regis properties usually operate in the competitive luxury market in Mexico.
On the points side, August and September have plenty of 100,000 Bonvoy points per night. That was where the math is worth thinking over. To redeem 100,000 points to cover a 662 rate would equal approximately 0.66 cents per Marriott Bonvoy point.
That does not imply that the redemption is a poor idea per se, as new hotel openings are truly thrilling and in case Costa Mujeres is on your list, there is something somewhat appealing about spending points to be one of the first customers. However, when you are concerned about point value maximization, it is worth monitoring rate changes particularly as the property settles and the availability changes as well.
This introduction is part of an even larger trend whereby luxury hotel chains are increasingly investing in the Caribbean coast of Mexico. A continuous flow of up-market properties has been experiencing a steady stream of high-end properties in the Riviera Maya and beyond the borders of Cancun over the last decade, and the competition has forced the bar to be raised considerably. There is a greater variety of options to choose among guests today. It means that new entrants like this one have to get the details right at the beginning.
The foundation that St. Regis has is solid to build on. The hallmark butler service of the brand, its reputation of elegant rather than flashy luxury and its position within the portfolio of Marriott make it a natural fit with a destination that is trying to distinguish itself out of the larger and noisier resorts a few miles further down the road.
Whether this property is fully realized to the expectation will be realized once more when guests are literally checking in and sharing their experiences. But the bones are good: the site is good, the restaurant menu is ambitious and the beachfront footprint leaves the design with room to breathe.

A fresh wave of attention hits Mexico’s Caribbean shoreline as the St. Regis Costa Mujeres Resort nears completion. Spreading across close to nine beach-kissed acres, it holds just 158 rooms set wide apart for space and quiet. Dining unfolds through four separate spots, each with its own rhythm and flavor.
Guests will find the signature butler touch woven into daily moments, a trait long tied to the St. Regis name. When doors open on June 25, 2026, those who visit early get more than comfort they step into something untouched. Being among the first matters, even if only because it feels different.
For every 100,000 points used, paying roughly $662 means each point covers just under 0.66 cents not the strongest return. Still, when prices jump during busy times, handing over cash might cost more than spending points. Those eyeing Costa Mujeres could find this spot appealing, especially if loud beach crowds aren’t their thing. Instead of waiting, locking in a stay now makes sense, since interest tends to build once travelers notice thoughtful details others miss.
