What you Actually Get for that Offer

The mechanisms are very easy to understand. If you have a $300 stay or more with an SLH, Amex will give a $100 rebate on your bill. This equates to savings of about 33%, which is a decent return on a hotel you'd likely have booked anyway.

A Booking Channel is More Important Than You Might Think

This is where the situation gets a little more complex. This offer probably won't apply if you book SLH hotels through Hilton, as, thanks to Hilton's partnership with SLH, Hilton Honors members earn and redeem points at select SLH properties. Amex's terms make it very clear that the booking must be made through Amex's own channels (slh.com or Amex's reservations phone line) and not a third party such as hilton.com or the Hilton app.

That is a worthwhile consideration of a trade-off. By booking directly with Hilton, you'll be able to accumulate and redeem Hilton points, which also have their own value, depending on your Hilton loyalty plan. By booking directly through SLH, however, you'd be eligible for this $100 discount, as well as SLH's program of its own, INVITED, that includes other privileges such as room upgrades, early check-in and late check-out at participating hotels.

The two booking options come down to two questions: Does the guaranteed $100 savings accurately reflect the value you'll receive from Hilton points? For many travelers, particularly those who aren't involved in the extensive Hilton program, the direct discount will be worth more.

What about booking through a Travel Advisor?

If you have one, there's another wrinkle to mention when dealing with a travel advisor. Other hotels that are members of the SLH brand participate in Virtuoso, a luxury travel agent network that provides additional benefits, such as room upgrades, resort credits, and free breakfast when booked through a Virtuoso affiliated travel advisor.

A Virtuoso booking, technically speaking, is not a “direct” booking, because it goes through an advisor and not directly to SLH or booking directly onto their website. However, the hotel will normally bill your card in the same manner as it would for any other reservation. That's why there's a decent possibility that these bookings may still be eligible for the Amex offer, but it's not a certainty, and if you sign up for the offer then you'll be able to keep an eye on your statement, instead of assuming that it will post automatically.
