American Airlines Is Bringing Starlink Onboard

There's a joke among people who fly often. In-flight Wi-Fi is like a waiting room. It's there. It doesn't always work well. American Airlines wants to change that. They just announced a deal with SpaceX to add their Starlink internet service to over 500 planes. This will start happening in 2027.

American Airlines is making an effort to improve in-flight internet. They already started this in 2026. Now they're taking it to the level with Starlink.

First Some Context on Where American Stands

Earlier in 2026 American Airlines made Wi-Fi free for loyalty members on most of their planes. This was done with the help of AT&T. Now loyalty members can log in with their credentials. Get online. This put American Airlines in the category as Delta and United when it comes to the internet.

The Wi-Fi rollout covered all domestic flights. It uses Viasat and Intelsat satellite systems. For passengers its been a big improvement.

The problem with Viasat and Intelsat is that their satellites are really away. About 22,000 miles above Earth. This makes the internet connection slower and less reliable. It's not that the system is broken. It's how it works.

That's where Starlink comes in. It's meant to make the internet faster and more reliable on planes. American Airlines is using Starlink to improve their in-flight internet. They want to make sure passengers have an experience on their flights.

American Airlines and Starlink are working together to make in-flight internet better. American Airlines is getting Starlink to improve their internet. This will make flights better for passengers.

What Makes Starlink Different

Starlink works in a different way than regular internet in airplanes. Of a few satellites really far away from Earth Starlink uses thousands of satellites in low orbit about 340 miles up. This shorter distance means the signal doesn't take long to get to the plane so you get lower delay and faster, more steady speeds.

The Starlink equipment used in planes can handle speeds of up to 1 Gbps per antenna. That is fast enough to watch videos, make video calls and use work tools without any lag or interruptions. This is a change, not just a small improvement.

The 2027 Rollout

Americans plan to install Starlink to focus on its Airbus narrowbody fleet. This fleet handles domestic and short international flights. New planes, like the A321XLR and A321neo will come with Starlink already installed. The plan is to equip over 500 planes starting in 2027.

International flights on widebody planes with Panasonic systems are not part of this plan. So passengers on flights will have to wait a bit longer for a similar upgrade. For now the focus is, on flights.

The one thing American haven't said yet is how much it will cost. Will people who are part of AAdvantage still get access when Starlink is installed? This is the question. Other airlines have usually made Starlink free. Tied it to loyalty programs. So people expect American to do the same. If passengers had to pay for something they got for free that would be a step. American probably knows that.

American is not the one in this race but things are moving really fast. To be clear American is joining a race that is already going on. Some other airlines are already doing this like United Airlines, which has than 300 planes with Starlink right now and they want to have over 800 by the end of 2026.

American Isn't First, But the Field Is Moving Fast

To be clear, American is joining a race that's already well underway. A few carriers leading or matching this effort:

  • Southwest Airlines is also doing this they are putting Starlink on than 300 planes by the end of the year.
  • Alaska Airlines wants to have all of its planes small, with Starlink by 2027.
  • British Airways had its Starlink flight in March 2026 and its parent company is also doing this with other airlines like Aer Lingus, Iberia and Vueling.
  • Emirates is putting Starlink on its planes the 777 fleet.

Hawaiian Airlines was one of the big airlines in the US to do this and JSX, a small airline has been giving free Starlink to its passengers for a while now.

It is clear that all the airlines are using Starlink for their internet. American is just making sure it is not left behind.

This is important for more than the technology

You might think that getting Wi-Fi on a plane is not a big deal but it actually matters a lot to people who travel, especially for work. When the internet, on a plane is bad it is not just annoying it can also mean you miss a deadline or an important call. When it works well it is a different story.

You can actually get work done on a three-hour flight. You can go away for the weekend. Not fall behind. American getting Starlink is also a sign that they care about what their passengers want. They already gave us Wi-Fi now they are making sure it is actually good. This is a deal and it shows that American is thinking about how to make its passengers happy.

The Bottom Line

If you are an AAdvantage member who uses the Wi-Fi you should watch how American Airlines will let people access the internet once Starlink is live. American Airlines has not confirmed if the free Wi-Fi will still be available.

For AAdvantage members any change to the Wi-Fi would be big news. For others 2027 looks like it will be a year to fly with American Airlines if you want to stay connected. The Starlink technology is real. There is competition pushing American Airlines to move. The rollout timeline is specific. That is more, than what you can say for many airline upgrade promises.
