American Express is moving all its resources in the direction of sports, and a new card is coming

The card enthusiasts and sports lovers should not miss this news; American Express has done something at the middle of the two. The strategic partnership is built around a completely new co-branded credit card, which will be the first of its kind between the sports brand and sports giant Fanatics, who offers everything from card trading to sports apparel, live sports and entertainment.

Logically there's no reason why it shouldn't, it's a partnership. Almost 80 percent of American Express's U.S. consumer cardmembers identify themselves as sports fans, the company found. That's a big crowd waiting to be converted to a product that taps into their passion.

Today's fan is a Modern Fan Partnership

The Amex-Fanatics announcement, which occurred on May 20, 2026, is more than just a card announcement. At certain Fanatics online and retail partners around the world, American Express will be the payments partner, providing cardmembers with an extra incentive to tap their Amex the next time they shop for gear, collectibles or tickets.

Amex is also a presenting sponsor for the annual Fanatics Fest in New York, which is hosted by the brand. The addition of the fourth day of programming will also be added to the 2010 edition reflecting the festivals growing momentum. Throughout the event, Amex cardmembers will enjoy special experiences and benefits.

The two companies will also be creating co-branded events, which will be available at various sports events throughout the year, giving fans plenty more opportunities to experience the brand's partnership, aside from paper.

Talking about the card, what is known so far

The outcome of this alliance will be the Fanatics American Express® Card, which could be released later in 2026. It's a pretty solid situation for sports-obsessed consumers, although there's still more to be revealed, which Amex has said will be available in the next few months.

As of yet, we do have the following facts about the new card:

  • Rewards Cardmembers will earn FanCash, Fanatics' rewards currency, which can be used to buy merchandise, tickets, trading cards, collectibles and other Fanatics experiences.
  • Higher loyalty tier Cardholders will be eligible for higher Fanatics loyalty tier and higher tier rewards across the Fanatics ecosystem.
  • Complete access to the American Express network. The card will be equipped with the full suite of offers and benefits, travel protection, and experiences that the American Express network provides, and that those who use the network are already familiar and appreciated.

This Is Big is the Transfer Partner Angle

Perhaps most importantly, for points fans, isn't the card itself, but what's attached. In the coming year, Fanatics will be an American Express Membership Rewards transfer partner.

This will eventually bring about the possibility for tens of millions of Americans to purchase FanFash with their points on their Amex card, which include Membership Rewards points (like Amex Platinum Card, Gold Card, Everyday Preferred). It's a completely new method of earning points that will be welcomed by those who already have a good balance in their Membership Rewards account.

Nothing has been disclosed on the transfer ratios or how, yet that will make a world of distinction regarding whether or not this will be a redemption or novelty game. The infrastructure being built here however is important. Amex is essentially telling sports fans that they can pay for their fan lifestyle by spending some of their every day spending.

The strategic sense for Amex as a result of this:

  • American Express has always been about the luxurious: concerts, restaurants, travel lounges, presale tickets. Sports makes perfect sense to that identity, one that Amex has been trying to assert more strongly in the last few years.
  • But the Fanatics partnership, however, is different in that it is a partnership on every level with the Fan Experience. It's not simply a card that entails early ticket sales. A relationship with your money and products, collectibles, live experiences and loyalty points for one of the world's most recognized sports commerce platforms.
  • The payments and co-brand partner, Amex, strengthens the financial base, the company has been growing rapidly, with a number of acquisitions and league partnerships. The two companies are taking a leap of faith in assuming that there is enough overlap between sports fans and premium credit card holders that they can produce something that's really sustainable; that it can be sustained.

The Bottom Line

There's much that we don't yet know. All of the above Fanatics Amex card details are all still to be determined from earning rates to sign-up bonuses, annual fees to FanCash-to-Membership-Rewards transfer ratio, it will all play a role in the card's success or failure. But, they are correct in their promise.

If you're lucky though, and have a certain type of person who already has a lot of money to spend on Fanatics, a team, and enjoys the Amex environment, this can be a very rewarding deal. For the larger membership rewards community, it's never late to observe a new transfer partner, particularly if you don't have a sports merchandise redemption plan.

Be sure to watch this one. As the card launch is just around the corner, and the integration of the Fanatics ONE looms, a full picture should should start to form and it's one of the more interesting card stories of the year.
