Avianca Launches Nonstop San Francisco Guatemala City Flights Just in Time for the 2026 World Cup

Avianca Launches Nonstop San Francisco Guatemala City Flights Just in Time for the 2026 World Cup

For football fans, a direct service would make travelling between the Bay Area and Guatemala far more convenient. Instead of dealing with long layovers or multiple connections, supporters could enjoy a quicker and simpler journey, particularly during major international tournaments and other high-demand travel periods. The added convenience would be especially welcomed by those regularly travelling to follow matches or visit family and friends.

The benefits extend well beyond the football community. A non-stop route would provide a valuable link for the large Guatemalan population in the Bay Area, making it easier for passengers to maintain family, cultural, and business connections. With strong demand from leisure travellers and the visiting friends and relatives (VFR) market, the service has the potential to become an important long-term connection between the two regions.

On June 1, 2026, Avianca, the flag carrier of Colombia, quietly entered history by operating the first non-stop flight between San Francisco (SFO) to Guatemala City (GUA) in the country. The route itself does not have to wonder about it, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup weeks away and the Bay Area poised to host several games in June and July, the new route just time of its launch fits the bill.

A Route that is too long overdue

Until now, passengers travelling to Guatemala from Northern California had no other options but to leave via another hub, typically Los Angeles, Miami and a Central American exit. The non-existence of a direct service to Guatemala has always been a frustration to a region with strong cultural and family connections to their home country with the large Guatemala community here in the Bay Area.

That's what has been changed with the new Avianca seasonal routes. The service is set to run four times a week, from 1st June to 31st August 2026, coinciding with the high-travel World Cup season. If you like football, or want to watch a game in person, this flight takes off a lot of the hassle and if you live in the Bay Area and are going down to see your family, knowing that you won't be stuck in traffic is a benefit.

Schedule and What You'll See Up Ahead

It is relatively convenient that the service is available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays throughout the week. The scheme is run like this:

  • Flight AV553 departs San Francisco at 7:45 a.m. and arrives in Guatemala City at 2:15 p.m.
  • Return flight AV552 leaves Guatemala City at 1:20 a.m. and reaches San Francisco at 6:25 a.m.
  • The route is operated by Avianca’s Airbus A320, offering 180 seats per flight.
  • Four weekly round trips provide more than 1,440 seats between the two cities each week.
  • The service introduces nonstop connectivity in a market that previously lacked direct flights.
  • Enhanced air links support travel demand generated by the 2026 FIFA World Cup while strengthening long-term regional connectivity.

The United States, Canada and Mexico are hosting an oil-pumping, gas-blowing 2026 FIFA World Cup that is roaring in to bring serious international travel demand to North American cities. Six of the tournament's games will be held at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, home of the great San Francisco Bay area.

Previously, it took fans from Guatemala and other Central American countries longer to make the trip to see those games, they had to make layovers, and it cost more. A direct flight from Guatemala City to San Francisco saves time, or at least makes it a more viable option for fans who may have considered going to the World Cup but can't make it out for the match.

Avianca definitely heard what we were saying. The new flights come on the same day that June in full swing as World Cup fever; by then, fans from Central America will be already craving to cross the oceans to spend the night in Northern California for the games. A sensible and timely business ploy.

Beyond Summer 2026: The Future of Avianca’s San Francisco–Guatemala Service

As the seasonal service is scheduled to end on 31 August 2026, attention naturally shifts to what happens next. The idea of a direct connection between San Francisco and Guatemala is far from new. The Bay Area is home to one of the largest Guatemalan communities in the United States, creating long-standing demand for convenient, non-stop travel between the two regions.

The route has benefited from strong passenger demand, supported not only by travel associated with the 2026 FIFA World Cup but also by continued growth in leisure travel and the VFR (visiting friends and relatives) segment. With load factors appearing healthy and the underlying market remaining robust, the service has demonstrated clear potential beyond its initial seasonal operation.

Given these factors, there is a compelling case for Avianca to consider extending the route beyond the planned end date or even making it a permanent part of its network. The combination of strong community ties, sustained travel demand, and favourable market fundamentals suggests that the San Francisco Guatemala City service could remain viable well beyond the current season.

Final Thought

Avianca's San Francisco Guatemala nonstop is among those flights that seem like such a good idea it must have taken too long. The World Cup had always been a hot potato, but it now acted as the impetus for the airline to finally make a move on the demand. This flight will serve as a lifeline for soccer fans over the next three months, a convenience for Bay Area Guatemalan families, and a step in the right direction in Northern California's connection to Central America without a layover!

Time will tell if Avianca will continue with it after the tournament but if there is any indication in the amount of interest that is seen early in the summer, then it has a decent chance of being there going forward once August gets here. If you need to travel before September between San Francisco and Guatemala City, there is no contest on which airline to choose. Avianca is the clear choice for now.
