Seattle to Barcelona and Rome continue to be popular destinations for travelers this summer, and Delta has announced nonstop flights.Seattle to Barcelona and Rome continue to be popular travel destinations for the summer months, and Delta has announced that they are launching nonstop flights to both cities.
Two all-new transatlantic routes from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport will debut this week at Delta Air Lines, with the airline now flying nonstop to Rome and Barcelona, two of Europe's most popular destinations, without having to connect through an East Coast or overseas hub.
First delta service is from Rome, and it's flight DL42 (1:55 pm 6 May 2026) that leaves Seattle. The Barcelona leg took place one day later with flight DL248 leaving at 3:25 p.m. on May 7. Both routes are now live and on sale.
The frequency is slightly different in the two:
The expansion is in a larger initiative by Delta to expand its base operations in Seattle, which the airline claims has established 28 new destinations in the last decade. These two lines are both from Europe and the completion of the hub's evolution as a true international gateway for the Pacific Northwest.
The fact that this is an important change for travelers to Seattle can be easy to overlook. Until quite recently, there wasn't any direct flights between SEA and both Rome and Barcelona. Passengers choosing to fly to either city were forced to fly through Atlanta or the European hub, which would then require an extra flight and more hours to get to their destination.
That's changing fast. At the end of April 2026, Alaska Airlines launched its own Seattle-Rome route, joining Delta as the two airlines on the route with alliance options (oneworld and SkyTeam respectively). But the rivalry on the Seattle-Rome route is really good news for travelers; in the long run, it usually results in better award availability and pricing.
Delta's situation is even stronger on the Barcelona side: They are the only airline currently flying a nonstop flight from Seattle to Barcelona. That's a significant shift in the route map for travellers who have been routing through Madrid, London or any other city to reach the BCN.

Booking with cash: Google Flights and Delta.com have calendar views that allow for convenient identification of cheapest travel days throughout the summer schedule. A few days before or after the launch of new routes across the Atlantic could really mean the difference in cost.
Booked in economy: Delta SkyMiles will be offered for one-way economy fares at roughly 45,100 miles per person. If you have or have the opportunity to transfer your points into Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, then for economy fares to Europe, they offer the same for around 30,000 points one-way, which is much more efficient if you have points to spend.
Booking Delta One business class with points: This is when it gets tricky. Delta isn't offering up a lot of value on business class awards, which are priced at 300,000+ SkyMiles one-way on most dates, and a few have limited availability around 260,000 miles. Limiting further options, partner award availability through SkyTeam programs is not currently showing on these routes.
The big lesson for business travelers: keep an eye out as the schedule develops and new routes are launched, as they may also offer partner award availability as the departure dates are nearing and there are still unsold seats available. With Delta's membership of SkyTeam, the programs to look out for are Flying Blue and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club.
While Delta is a member of SkyTeam, its transatlantic ticketing can be done with points from any of Delta's SkyTeam partner programs not only SkyMiles. Air France-KLM's Flying Blue and Virgin Atlantic's Flying Club are the two most convenient and widely used programs for Americans interested in using non-Delta points to fly Delta.
They’ve also occasionally offered promotional award pricing on Delta transatlantic fares (specifically on Flying Blue), so if you're not pressed on time, it's a good idea to keep an eye on them. If you have points you want to use to earn free vacations, you can transfer them from American Express Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards to either program and then use those points to book them when they present themselves.
These launches are not just about the routes; they also point to a broader significance for Delta. It's a sign that a big carrier is beginning to consider Seattle a full-service international hub, not just a West Coast stopover for flights to Asia-Pacific, but a hub for transatlantic traffic.
These new flights will put an end to one of the biggest sticking points in European travel planning for the approximately 4 million residents of the greater Seattle, Washington area and millions of others in the Pacific Northwest who depend on SEA as their primary airport. No more the addition of the domestic leg just to meet an transatlantic gateway. Last of the hub-to-hub itineraries for the East Coast! Direct airfares from home to two of Europe's most popular destinations.

Seattle just got fresh flights to Barcelona and Rome within days of each other, a rare boost for overseas travel from the region lately. What stands out is Barcelona a place Delta now reaches without any rival airline doing the same straight shot offering locals a path across the Atlantic they previously had to piece together themselves.
One step at a time, the deal gets clearer for point collectors eyeing Virgin Atlantic’s Flying Club economy rewards sit within reach, though business seats stay steep and scarce right now. Change may come once flight paths firm up, especially with SkyTeam allies unlocking more room down the line. Spotting a Delta One chance to Rome or Barcelona? Waiting it out, watching the system closely, beats locking in when costs are still stretched high.
Right now, flights are running, planes feel fresh, destinations practically speak for themselves. Spain and Italy just landed a straight shot from Seattle each summer something quietly thrilling slips into place.
